Trend #6. Macronutrient Makeover

“Macronutrient Makeover” takes the sixth spot in Innova Market Insights’ list of Top Trends for 2020, reflecting how consumer sentiments around macronutrients are evolving.

Changing health perceptions of macronutrients, both in terms of content and balance, are triggering product re-formulations, balanced concept development and complete category flips. Innova’s experts remark that typically consumer focus is on “one macronutrient at a time”, with sugar currently being under scrutiny. According to a 2019 Innova Consumer Survey, “low/no sugar” claims lead with the strongest influence on purchasing decisions with US consumers. Similarly, health perceptions surrounding fats have changed considerably over time, influenced by both evolving science and media coverage, while protein remains the only macronutrient yet to be vilified. Innova also notes that fiber is making a big comeback in 2020.
